01 September 2006 Women's car insurance price drops
The average cost of car insurance for women dropped by £58 to £712 this year, while the cost of cover for men fell £16 to £958, a price comparison website claims.
Moneysupermarket reports that the overall drop in car insurance premiums was nearly five per cent, encompassing an 8.2 per cent fall for women and a 1.7 per cent fall for men.
Peter Gerrard, senior researcher at Moneysupermarket, has pointed to the appeal of specialist women-only insurers as one of the reasons for this difference.
"An increase in the number of aggregators, along with providers' desire to be top of the best buys has also helped maintain the steady reduction in policy prices over the past few years," he said.
"Motorists who are prepared to shop around for the best deal each year will always come out on top, whatever their sex," he added.
This news comes as Norwich Union chief executive Simon Machell warned in the Times that the company's projected rise in the price of car insurance will hit high risk drivers, specifically young men, harder than other customers.
