17 October 2006 Warning over valuables left in cars Car owners in Britain are leaving over £3 billion worth of possessions unattended in their car, according to research by a car insurance provider.
The study by Post Office Car Insurance found that 95 per cent of car owners sometimes left valuables including CDs and mobile telephones in their vehicles.
Clare Oldstein, head of communications at the company, said: "Our advice to motorists is to only leave valuable items in the car if it's absolutely necessary and if they do, to make sure the items are hidden in the boot or at least out of sight of potential thieves."
She added that drivers should ensure that they have purchased sufficient car insurance in case of theft and to never leave documents such as their car insurance certificate or registration details in their vehicle.
The Home Office recorded 282,816 incidents of car theft in the UK in 2003.
