07 December 2006 Theft from vehicles 'on the up'
While car-theft is on the decline due to improvements in prevention technology, burglaries from cars is on the increase, it has been claimed, while the police are often only notified when a car insurance claim is made.
Auto Theft Merchandise, a novel vehicle security system producer, has reported that when drivers leave their car and leave items on display, it makes it simple for robbers to steal their possessions.
Andy Mills, director of Auto Theft Merchandise, said: "The police in Milton Keynes advise you to remove everything from your car - this means that people have to carry everything around."
He recommended the purchase of a laptop security box which can remain in the car, while noting that alarms are often ineffective as they are often ignored.
Mr Mills predicted that in future, car insurance companies would add additional clauses, compelling drivers to remove the face from their stereo if it is to be covered in the event of theft.
In October, Post Office Car Insurance reported that British drivers left £3.3 billion of possessions unattended in their cars.
