26 October 2006  TfL launches campaign against illegal drivers
A joint campaign by Transport for London (TfL) and the Metropolitan Police has been launched in an attempt to reduce the number of illegal drivers on the road, with special attention paid to those without car insurance and those neglecting to stop after a collision.

Research reported by the government shows that drivers without car insurance are ten times more likely to be convicted of drink driving, six times more likely to be convicted of driving a vehicle judged to be non-road worthy and three times more likely to get a conviction for driving without due care and attention.

TfL and the Metropolitan Police are combining to carry out an awareness and enforcement campaign for five weeks to remove illegal vehicles, such as those without car insurance, from the road.

Chief Inspector Mark Bird, from the Metropolitan Police traffic unit, said: "Uninsured drivers are a danger to the roads.

"Working in the traffic unit I am only too aware of the number of uninsured drivers that fail to stop at collisions."

Earlier this month, the mayor announced that TfL and the Metropolitan Police would receive joint funding for the provision of 375 extra Police Community Support Officers for the transport network in London.
