22 September 2006  Survey reveals autumn rise in car theft
September, October and November have been marked as the peak months for car theft, according to research by a car insurance provider.

The survey by Norwich Union notes that the rise in car theft is due to a few major factors, including fewer daylight hours, which both suits criminals who prefer to operate under cover of dark and also results in people using their cars less in the evenings.

Additionally, the company notes that some drivers leave recently purchased Christmas shopping in their cars.

The company noted that, despite its seasonal peak, that the general trend of car thefts has been an overall decline.

"We are pleased to see a continued improvement in the decline in number of stolen vehicles," said Nigel Batram, motor underwriting manager at Norwich Union.

However, he added that the company was urging car-owners "to follow the basic steps of vehicle security and continue to be vigilant with their vehicle - especially as the peak season for car theft is upon us".

The Home Office notes that while not being the sole factor in car insurance cost, the risk of theft of particular models is a constitutes part of the new car security rating used by motor insurance companies.
