04 October 2006 Specialist car insurance may 'not be cheaper'
Drivers attracted to specialist car insurance, including products aimed at women or older drivers, may be paying over the odds for cover, according to recent research.
The study, by price comparison website moneysupermarket.com, found that the cost of car insurance products solely could be up to 80 per cent higher than that of cheaper premiums elsewhere.
Similarly, the survey of car insurance for older drivers found that those products directed at the elderly were not necessarily the cheapest.
Richard Mason, director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: "While some specialist insurers will offer extra benefits to women, such as handbag cover up to £300, half price MOT or free mobile phone and connection, women should not be swayed by female-friendly adverts offering them cheaper car insurance.
"Instead, assess whether the extras are really beneficial to you and let the premiums speak for themselves."
In July this year, insurance provider Privilege claimed that drivers with four years or more no claims bonus can save £203 a year on the cost of car insurance.
