31 October 2006 Satnav survey reveals difference of opinion
British drivers using satellite navigation, also known as satnav systems, differ in their opinions of the value of the technology, according to a car insurance provider.
Research from Saga motor insurance found that while around a sixth of drivers find their satnav a distraction on the road, a fifth find the system comforting - even if they are already aware of their course.
A third of drivers claim that they do not trust the technology to give them the correct directions, while 73 per cent admit to taking the wrong route to "confuse" the system, while some expressed concerns of safety issues of those with the systems.
"Two thirds of motorists considered the road safety implications - calling for it to be made an offence to tamper with satnav systems while on the road," the company reported.
Last month, car insurance provider Norwich Union warned car drivers not to keep valuables, including satellite navigation systems, on display while a car is parked.
It added that using a garage can reduce the risk of theft and lower car insurance premiums.
