26 September 2006  New stats on drivers without car insurance
Statistics released last week by the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) have discovered the UK district hotspots of those driving without car insurance.

Based on the number of insurance claims from 1997-2005 involving those without car insurance, the study found that West Gorton in Manchester had the highest rate of uninsured driving, at 6.27 times more than the national average.

Other cities with districts featured in the list were Birmingham, Bradford, Liverpool, London and Manchester, with the group diagnosing that the problem is prevalent in urban areas.

Ashton West, chief executive of the MIB, said: "Now that the police know where the highest proportions of uninsured motorists are, they can focus their resources and make life very difficult for these criminals."

Highway Code regulations state that the penalty for driving without insurance is a fine of up to £5,000 and the imposition of six-to-eight penalty points on the drivers' licence.

Industry figures quoted by the Department for Transport in a 2004 report on uninsured drivers state the average driver pays an additional cost of £30 on car insurance premiums as a result of accidents cause by uninsured drivers.
