22 September 2006 New proposals to slash young driver injuries
Four major proposals have been made by a coalition of car insurance companies, road safety groups and motoring organisations in an attempt to prevent the large numbers of deaths and injuries of young drivers in the UK.
Proposals by the coalition, launched by the Association of British Insurers (ABI), include the introduction of a minimum learning period of one year and a structured drivers' learning programme whereby instructors or those learning to drive being compelled to keep a logbook of their lessons.
Additionally, the group supports a reduction in the number of passengers permitted in cars driven by young drivers and having young people driving less at night, noting that some car insurance companies have already introduced lower premiums to reduce night-time driving.
Stephen Haddrill, director general of the ABI, said: "We urge the government to adopt these proposals to improve safety on our roads and reduce this tragic loss of life."
Think!, the government's road safety website, reported that there were 3,221 fatalities on British roads in 2004.
