21 November 2006  Many road accidents 'are avoidable'
Many accidents that occur every day on roads in the UK are avoidable, new research by a car insurance firm published this week has claimed.

The study by Sainsbury's Bank has reported that 38 per cent of Britons said they have driven when they feel tired, while 26 per cent admit they will speed excessively.

Richard Clark, car insurance manager at Sainsbury's Bank, said: "If planning a long journey to visit family and friends, make sure you take regular breaks."

He added that if drivers were planning on drinking alcohol during the Christmas holiday they should plan an alternative method of transport, with drivers also urged to refrain from speeding, even if they are late, to reduce the number of car accidents.

Car insurance provider AA Financial Services reported earlier this year that a quarter of all households in the UK contain a driver with at least one conviction for speeding offences.
