25 August 2006  Manufacturers recommend cheaper car insurance
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has called for cheaper car insurance for cars fitted with electronic stability control (ESC).

Motor insurance research centre Thatcham recently investigated the safety device and claimed that death and serious injuries can be reduced by up to 40 per cent by the system.

SMMT spokesman Nigel Wonnacott has backed the results of the research and urged car insurance companies and Thatcham itself to push for cheaper car insurance premiums for vehicles fitted with the device.

"The car industry has invested significantly in passive safety systems, protecting occupants and pedestrians involved in accidents," he said.

"However, millions of pounds have also been spent on accident avoidance systems, like lane departure warnings, assisted braking, anti-rollover and adaptive headlights which have saved countless lives," he added.

ESC is crash-avoidance technology that uses computer controls that selectively brakes individual wheels of the car to help the driver retain control of the vehicle in the event of skidding or similar incidents.
