28 November 2006 Inner city drivers 'have higher car insurance premiums'
People driving their cars in inner city areas are likely to pay higher car insurance premiums than those living in the suburbs or rural areas, it has been reported.
Norwich Union has noted that the calculations of car insurance prices are based in part on the number of claims made in specific areas.
This is due to some areas having both a higher number of accidents and also a higher incidence of theft and criminal damage, the insurer states.
"If, for example, you live in a city, from a motor insurance perspective, then the cost of claims will naturally be higher," said David Ross, a spokesperson for Norwich Union.
"In the countryside these occurrences do not happen as often," he added, "inner cities generally tend to be worse".
Earlier this year, car insurance provider swiftcover.com reported that ten per cent of drivers take their children to school once a week in their cars in Greater London, lower than the national average of 14 per cent.
