21 July 2006  Driving into difficulties
A third of British drivers planning to take their cars across into Europe this summer could well be putting their lives at risk through a lack of basic knowledge of foreign road rules, according to a recent survey.

The study, conducted by Lloyds TSB Insurance, has revealed that of the million people planning to drive on the continent this year five per cent are destined to have a car accident.

One in ten people have admitted to going the wrong way round a roundabout, while 15 per cent of those questioned said they had driven on the wrong side of the road in Europe.

More than half of those surveyed did not even know if their car insurance policy would cover them for journeys in Europe.

Managing director at Lloyds TSB Insurance, Phil Loney, said: "It's extremely worrying that so many motorists are setting off on foreign holidays without making the necessary preparations and knowing little or nothing about their destination.

"It's all too easy to place the blame on other drivers, but the bottom line is that by failing to check their insurance policies or carry the right equipment in their cars, many holidaymakers could be breaking the law or driving into potential disaster."

In France, for example, all drivers must carry a warning triangle, a torch and first aid kit.
