22 July 2006 Drivers warned to take heat safety steps
Drivers and car owners are being advised to take care especially on long journeys as the high temperatures and the recent hot weather look to be set to continue.
With temperatures across the UK reaching well over 30 degrees C, Green Flag Motoring Assistance breakdown specialist is recommending motorist pay special attention to their vehicles to stay safe in the heat.
Drivers should always check their car's water levels before setting off, as well as ensuring they themselves have enough bottled water to drink, to avoid overheating.
If sitting in traffic or taking a long trip, fuel levels also need to be taken into account, especially if running an air-conditioning system, which use up lots energy.
Spokesperson for Green Flag, Philippa Naylor, commented: "We are expecting higher volumes of calls with over-heating being a major issue in these high temperatures.
"Our advice to motorists is to avoid travelling in the hottest and busiest parts of the day and be well prepared."
Checking weather forecasts and being prepared for sudden downpours and thunderstorms, as well as carrying a fully charged mobile phone along with the contact details of your breakdown service, are also recommended precautions for drivers.
Green Flag states that more than 90 per cent of its customers receive roadside assistance within the hour.
