14 December 2006  Drivers warned over sat nav reliance
Drivers wanting to avoid accidents and car insurance claims caused by improper use of satellite navigation (sat nav) systems have been given advice by an online journey planner.

Map24 warns that drivers should always play close attention to the road first and foremost, rather than their sat nav system, in addition to using their common sense and being prepared to stop and ask for direction.

The company notes that the systems are not infallible and can result in serious accidents if used without thought.

Chris Wallet, managing director of Map24, noted that many systems had recently been bought and forecast further sales at Christmas.

"Most people use them wisely and safely, but there are too many incidents of drivers relying far too much on their systems."

He added that drivers should plan journeys to unfamiliar destinations on the internet in advance of travel.

RAC Direct Insurance recently reported that while sat nav systems are useful and can reduce car insurance premiums, map reading is an important skill that is "indispensable".
