29 November 2006  Drivers 'want more traffic cops'
Drivers in the UK want a greater number of traffic police on British roads, citing fears over poor driving and traffic crime, a car insurance company reports.

Research from Tesco Car Insurance has revealed that 42 per cent of British drivers want visible police patrols to enforce safety on the roads.

The survey also reported that 72 per cent of drivers felt that public transport was too inefficient in terms of available routes and services to allow them to give up their cars and use alternate methods of getting around.

Allan Burns, head of Tesco Car Insurance, said: "Our findings reveal a sizeable majority of motorists feel unprotected on the roads, favouring tougher penalties for those breaking the law."

He added that drivers are "trapped" between paying for the rising costs of driving and the lack of any true alternative to their necessary everyday car journeys.

In September, car insurance provider Norwich Union reported that some car thieves were stealing vehicles as a means of getting to seaside resorts and then abandoning them.
