26 August 2006 Car insurance company urges drivers to stay in line
Large numbers of UK drivers are failing to recognise common road markings, according to reports from a car insurance company.
Shelias' Wheel's new Marking and Parking survey claims that only one per cent of those surveyed correctly identified four selected common road markings, with over 78 per cent recognising less than half.
Jacky Brown, spokeswoman for Sheilas' Wheels, has expressed concern that misidentifying road markings can threaten drivers' safety and result in accidents, which would increase car insurance premiums.
"We urge all drivers to be observant when out and about in their cars," she said.
"If they spot lines or markings they don't understand they need to dust down their copy of the Highway Code and refresh their memory," she continued.
A poll by Privilege Insurance last year found that less than one percent of drivers would gain full marks on a Highway Code test with around a third believing they would fail completely.
Insurers have stressed that the way for drivers to protect no claims bonuses on car insurance, as well as their safety, is to make sure they remain aware of the Highway Code.
