10 October 2006  ABD questions black box motives
The Association of British Drivers has expressed concerns that global positioning system "black boxes" installed into cars may be extended beyond their stated uses for car insurance purposes.

Currently, the systems are being used to inform car insurance companies at what time drivers are using their vehicles, with a premium on night-time driving for younger car-users.

As well as criticising the "micro-management" of car insurance premium calculations, a spokesman for the group warned that the systems may be used by government to harvest driving details.

"The government's own research shows that they are not trusted with an individual's personal journey details by the majority of the British public," he said.

"The use of service providers, such as insurance companies, is seen as a way around the problem."

Price comparison website moneysupermarket.com recently reported that British drivers were averse to the installation of black box surveillance systems in their vehicles - even if it saved them money on car insurance.
